The Importance of Pre-Production

I always say pre – production is like the foundation of a house. Without it, you have rubble. When considering a film for your company, it is key to express your ideas rather than wing it.

From these initial discussions, there are two major steps in the creative process. The first is the script. Having a clear, concise script that aligns with the client’s goals and commercial challenge is essential.

The tricky part is making sure the script is informative without coming off as a preachy lesson. Most people prefer to be spoken to on equal terms with shared goals in mind. If a video feels like a company is talking down to the audience, it can push potential customers away. That is why a well crafted script is so important for a video’s success.

Next up is the visual side, which is just as important. A storyboard is essential to make sure the video works the way it should. It helps the client understand what the final video will look like and how it will flow while also giving the crew a clear picture of what is needed for each shot, whether it is specific camera gear or grip equipment. Ideally the script should match the visuals as it makes for a more harmonious viewing.

Showing up on set without a solid plan for how the video should look or how each shot connects to the next can lead to a disorganised final product. A storyboard also saves time on set eliminating the need to come up with new ideas or shots on the fly.
